And just like that, the first workout is behind us.

For the first time in 2020, a group of 10 Mariners pitchers threw their first bullpen sessions of the decade, including: LHP Nestor Cortes, LHP Yusei Kikuchi, RHP Phillips Valdéz, RHP Yoshihisa Hirano, LHP Ian McKinney, RHP Penn Murfee, LHP Anthony Misiewicz, RHP Brandon Brennan, RHP Dan Altavilla and RHP Sam Tuivailala.

Tomorrow, the back-field mounds will welcome 10 more pitchers, with names like LHP Justus Sheffield and RHP Logan Gilbert set to throw.

Quote of the Day — Mariners Pitcher Taijuan Walker

“I’m one hundred percent right now. I feel really good. I’ve got four bullpens under me, letting it go pretty good, too.”

“Athletes” Fielding Practice

Pitchers’ Fielding Practice is a time-honored tradition throughout Major League Spring Training camps in Arizona and Florida. This spring, the Mariners have put a new wrinkle on PFP.

The drills of fielding comebackers to the mound, covering first base on a ground ball to the first baseman, pickoff plays and so on are now known in Mariners Camp as AFP — Athletes’ Fielding Practice.

Ask any pitcher and he will tell you, pitchers are athletes, too. At the suggestion of pitching coach Pete Woodworth, those drills are now collectively known as AFP.

710 ESPN Seattle’s Shannon Drayer captured some of this morning’s AFP drills.

Rawlings Glove Day

Today, the Mariners hosted Rawlings for their annual “Glove Day” where Rawlings brings hundreds of sample gloves to show to the players, and takes orders for the upcoming season.
