Mariners Sign OF Junior Lake to Minor League Contract

Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has signed outfielder Junior Lake to a minor league contact with an invitation to Seattle’s Major League Spring Training camp.

Lake, 27, appeared in 19 games with AAA Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization in 2017, batting .246 (15x61) with 6 runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. After being released on May 1, he hit .288 (44x153) with 34 runs, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs and 34 RBI in 41 games with Bravos De Leon of the Mexican League. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound outfielder played with Oriente in the Dominican Winter League, batting .283 (34x120) with 21 runs, 4 doubles, 3 home runs, 8 RBI and 5 stolen bases in 33 games.

Lake, a native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, made his Major League debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2013. In parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Cubs (2013–15), Orioles (2015) and Blue Jays (2016), Lake is a career .235 (155x659) hitter with 17 home runs and 48 RBI in 223 career games. Lake originally signed with the Cubs as an international free agent on Feb. 13, 2007.
