Mariners Select RHP Matt Brash from Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Matt Brash, RHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Matt Andriese, RHP, designated for assignment.

The Mariners 40-man Major League roster remains at 39 players. Seattle’s active roster remains full at 28 players.

Brash will be in uniform (#47) and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game against the Athletics.

Brash, 23, has posted a 2.31 ERA (25 ER, 97.1 IP) with 48 walks and 142 strikeouts over 20 minor league appearances (19 starts) between High-A Everett (10 G, 9 GS) and Double-A Arkansas (10 GS) this season. He was promoted to Triple-A Tacoma on Sept. 25, but did not appear in a game with the Rainiers.

Brash made the start in a combined no-hitter with Double-A Arkansas on Sept. 2, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing only 1 walk with 11 strikeouts. Since the beginning of August, Brash is 3–1 with a 1.79 ERA (8 ER, 40.1 IP) with 17 walks and 59 strikeouts (13.17 K/9) over 7 starts with Double-A Arkansas. He has not allowed more than 3 earned runs in any minor league appearance this season, while surrendering 2 earned runs or less in 17 of his 20 outings.

Brash was acquired by the Mariners from San Diego as PTBNL in exchange for Taylor Williams (rhp) on Sept. 17, 2020. He was originally selected by San Diego in the 4th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Niagara University. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 2 minor league seasons in the Padres (2019) and Mariners (2021) organizations, going 6–4 with a 2.28 ERA (26 ER, 102.2 IP) with 48 walks and 150 strikeouts in 25 career games (20 starts).

Andriese, 32, has appeared in 8 games with the Mariners this season, posting a 2.45 ERA (3 ER, 11.0 IP) with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts. He appeared in 26 games with the Red Sox this season, going 2–3 with a 6.03 ERA (25 ER, 37.1 IP) with 11 walks and 38 strikeouts.

Andriese is a veteran of 7 Major League seasons with Tampa Bay (2015–18), Arizona (2018–19), Los Angeles-AL (2020), Boston (2021) and Seattle (2021). He was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 37th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. He was selected again by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft and was traded to Tampa Bay on January 22, 2014 as part of a 7-player deal. He made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay on April 10, 2015 vs. Miami. Overall, he is 28–37 with a 4.63 ERA (262 ER, 509.0 IP) with 147 walks and 474 strikeouts in 217 Major League appearances (50 starts).
