SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Brady Lail, RHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Jack Mayfield, INF, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Domingo Tapia, RHP, designated for assignment.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.

Lail (#62) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s game vs. Detroit.

Lail, 27, has appeared in 4 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, posting a 1.50 ERA (1 ER, 6.0 IP) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. In 5 Cactus League games this spring, he posted a 3.60 ERA (2 ER, 5.0 IP) with 4 strikeouts.

Lail appeared in 7 games with the Mariners in 2020, posting a 4.80 ERA (8 ER, 15.0 IP) with 7 walks and 11 strikeouts. The right-hander was claimed off waivers from Chicago-AL on August 10. Prior to joining Seattle, Lail had pitched in 2 career games at the Major League level, one in 2019 (Aug. 12-G2 vs. BAL w/NYY) and one in 2020 (Aug. 6 vs. MIL w/CWS). Overall, he has pitched to a 5.21 ERA (11 ER, 19.0 IP) in 9 career games. In 2019, Lail pitched in 26 games (1 start), covering 3 levels of New York-AL’s minor league system (A+, AA & AAA), posting a 4–2 record with 1 save and a 3.83 ERA (21 ER, 49.1 IP) with 67 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Lail was originally selected by the Yankees in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bingham (UT) High School. He spent parts of 8 seasons in New York-AL’s minor league system, posting a 51–33 record with a 3.97 ERA (327 ER, 741.0 IP) in 187 games (112 starts). He has 575 career strikeouts in the minors with 218 walks (2.64 SO/BB). He signed as a free agent with Chicago-AL on Nov. 27, 2019.

Mayfield, 30, was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on May 14, but has not appeared in a game for the Mariners. The right-handed hitting infielder was claimed off waivers by Seattle from Los Angeles-AL on April 27.

He has appeared in 49 Major League games in 3 seasons with Houston (2019–20) and Los Angeles-AL (2021), batting .165 (18x109) with 13 runs, 6 doubles, 2 home runs, 8 RBI, 3 walks and 32 strikeouts.

Mayfield signed with Houston as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Oklahoma on June 16, 2013. The Texas-native made his Major League debut with the Astros on May 27, 2019. He was claimed off waivers from Houston by Atlanta on Nov. 20, 2020 and was claimed off waivers from Atlanta by Los Angeles-AL on Feb. 25, 2021. Mayfield appeared in 2 games with the Angels this season, going 0-for-3 before being designated for assignment on April 24.

Tapia, 29, was optioned to the Alternate Training Site on May 4 after appearing in 2 games with the Mariners this season and 4.0 scoreless innings with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. He made his Mariners debut on May 1 after being recalled from the Alternate Training Site on April 29.

Tapia appeared in 5 Major League games with Boston in 2020, going 0–0 with a 2.08 ERA (4.1 IP, 1 ER) with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. The Dominican Republic native made his MLB debut with the Red Sox on Sept. 11, 2020 at Tampa Bay. He was claimed off waivers by Seattle from Boston on Oct. 23, 2020.

Tapia originally signed with the New York Mets as an amateur free agent on Dec. 16, 2009. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 2 Major League seasons with Boston (2020) and Seattle (2021), going 0–0 with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER, 6.1 IP) with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 7 career games.
