Mariners Select LHP Tommy Milone from Triple-A Tacoma

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:

· Tommy Milone (#53), LHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.

· Darren McCaughan, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game July 4).

· Penn Murfee, RHP, transferred from 15-day to 60-day Injured List (right elbow inflammation).

The Mariners Major League, 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.

Milone (ma-LONE), 36, is scheduled to start tonight’s game at San Francisco. In 11 starts with Triple-A Tacoma this season, the left-hander is 3–1 with a 4.47 ERA (25 ER, 50.1 IP) with 18 walks and 46 strikeouts.

Milone has made one start for the Mariners this season, tossing 4.2 innings with one run allowed on 3 hits on April 14 vs. Colorado. He was selected by Seattle on April 14 and designated for assignment the next day.

The Saugus, California native has made one career appearance at Oracle Park, recording the victory while pitching for Oakland on May 29, 2013 in a 9–6 win over Tim Lincecum and the Giants.

Milone has appeared in parts of 13 Major League seasons with 9 different clubs during his career, including two stints with Seattle (2019 & 2022-c). Overall, he is 53–52 with a 4.59 ERA (484 ER, 949.0 IP) with 229 walks and 713 strikeouts in 196 career games (146 starts). He made his Major League debut with the Washington Nationals on Sept. 3, 2011 vs. New York-NL.

McCaughan (mih-CACK-en), 27, was recalled by Seattle on Monday, but did not appear in a game. He has spent 3 stints with Seattle this season, tossing a combined 4.0 innings of relief on April 17 and May 30. In 13 starts with Triple-A Tacoma this season, McCaughan is 3–4 with a 6.56 ERA (52 ER, 71.1 IP) with 21 walks and 63 strikeouts.

McCaughan has appeared in 4 Major League games (one start), all with Seattle (2021-c). He is 0–0 with a 7.62 ERA (11 ER, 13.0 IP) with 7 walks and 9 strikeouts.

McCaughan was drafted by Seattle in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State (CA). The Los Alamitos, California native has appeared in 124 minor league games (115 starts) since 2017, going 30–41 with 2 saves and a 4.36 ERA (316 ER, 651.2 IP) with 141 walks and 581 strikeouts.

Murfee, 29, was placed on the 15-day Injured List (right elbow inflammation) on June 12 after tossing a scoreless inning on June 11 at Los Angeles-AL, his first appearance since May 3. He was also placed on the 15-day Injured List on May 6 (retroactive to May 4) with right elbow inflammation.

Murfee has appeared in 16 games with the Mariners this season, going 1–2 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER, 14.0 IP) with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks (3 intentional). Murfee has appeared in 2 Major League seasons with Seattle, posting a 2.70 ERA (25 ER, 83.1 IP) with 92 strikeouts and 28 walks in 80 games (one start).

The Nashville, Tennessee native was selected by the Mariners in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Murfee made his Major League debut on April 29, 2022 at Miami. In 2022, Murfee became the third Mariners rookie in franchise history to post a sub-3.00 ERA, sub-.200 opponent batting average and a sub-1.00 WHIP, joining Joel Piñeiro (2001) and Rafael Soriano (2003).
