Mariners Select INF/OF José Marmolejos from Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • José Marmolejos, INF/OF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Jimmy Yacabonis, RHP, designated for assignment.

The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40-players.

Marmolejos, 28, is batting .360 (91x253) with 58 runs, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 23 home runs, 71 RBI and 45 walks in 72 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season. Among qualified players, he leads the minor leagues in OPS (1.152), SLG (.700) and OBP (.452), while ranking 2nd in batting (.360). His 23 home runs this season rank T4th among all Triple-A hitters, while his 71 RBI rank tied for 2nd-most.

Marmolejos was part of the Mariners Opening Day roster and remained with the Major League club until he was designated for assignment on May 20. He was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on May 23. He is batting .139 (11x79) with 8 runs, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 9 RBI, and 14 walks in 31 games with the Mariners this season.

Marmolejos originally signed with the Washington Nationals as an amateur free agent on June 9, 2011. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on July 24, 2020 at Houston. Overall, the 6-foot-2, 239-pound infielder/outfielder has appeared in parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2020–21), batting .177 (33x186) with 20 runs, 6 doubles, 9 home runs, 27 RBI and 21 walks in 66 career games.

Yacabonis (YACK-ah-bone-iss), 29, was selected from Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 28 but did not pitch. He is 3–0 with 4 saves and a 1.72 ERA (6 ER, 31.1 IP) with 9 walks and 29 strikeouts in 24 games (1 start) with Triple-A Tacoma this season. He was signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent with an invite to spring training on Dec. 29, 2020 after spending the 2020 season in the Mariners organization.

He appeared in 2 games (1 start) with the Mariners in 2020, going 0–1 with a 3.86 ERA (1 ER, 2.1 IP) with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. In his Major League career, he’s appeared in 57 games (12 starts) with Baltimore (2017–19) and Seattle (2020), going 3–5 with a 5.71 ERA (66 ER, 104.0 IP) with 59 walks and 75 strikeouts.
