Mariners Select INF Leo Rivas from Triple-A Tacoma

ARLINGTON, Tex. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:

  • Leo Rivas (#76), INF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • J.P. Crawford, INF, placed on 10-day Injured List (right oblique strain), retroactive April 24.
  • Gregory Santos, RHP, transferred to 60-day Injured List (right latissimus dorsi strain).

Rivas, 26, will make his Major League debut when he first appears in a game. Rivas has appeared in 12 games this season with Triple-A Tacoma, batting .308 (16x52) with 12 runs, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 11 RBI, 5 stolen bases and 11 walks, getting on base at a .422 clip and slugging .462 (.883 OPS).

Rivas spent the 2023 season in Double-A Arkansas, hitting .255 (84x329) with 71 runs, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, 47 RBI, 50 stolen bases and 86 walks, getting on base at a .411 clip and slugging .347 (.757 OPS). His 50 stolen bases were tied for third-most int the Texas League.

The Maracay, Venezuela native has appeared in parts of 9 minor league seasons in the Angels (2015–19), Reds (2021–22) and Mariners (2022-c) systems, batting .252 (577x2287) with 416 runs, 90 doubles, 32 triples, 29 home runs, 263 RBI and 431 walks, getting on base at a .378 clip and slugging .358 (.736 OPS) in 664 games. He was signed by the Angels as an international free agent on July 11, 2014. Ranked as the Angles #11 prospect in 2018.

Crawford, 29, was scratched from yesterday’s game with right oblique soreness. In 22 games this season, he is batting .198 (17x86) with 13 runs, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 9 RBI and 11 walks, getting on base at a .296 clip, slugging .302 (.598 OPS).

The Long Beach native was named a Silver Slugger finalist in 2023. He finished 17th in the AL MVP voting and was named Seattle Chapter of the BBWAA Mariners Unsung Hero.

Crawford has appeared in 8 Major League seasons with Philadelphia (2017–18) and Seattle (2019-c), batting .250 (624x2493) with 135 doubles, 14 triples, 48 home runs, 258 RBI, 22 stolen bases and 326 walks, getting on base at a .342 clip, slugging .373 with a .716 OPS in 690 career games. The shortstop was acquired by Seattle along with INF Carlos Santana from Philadelphia in exchange for RHP Juan Nicasio, LHP James Pazos and INF Jean Segura on Dec. 3, 2018. Crawford was originally selected by the Phillies in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Lakewood High School (CA).

Santos, 24, was originally placed on the 15-day Injured List on March 28 (retroactive to March 25) with a right latissimus dorsi strain. He appeared in 60 games during the 2023 season with the Chicago White Sox, going 2–2 with 5 saves, a 3.39 ERA (25 ER, 66.1 IP), 17 walks and 66 strikeouts.

The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native was acquired by Seattle on February 3, 2024 from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for OF Zach DeLoach, RHP Prelander Berroa and a Competitive Balance Round B draft pick.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher has appeared in parts of 3 Major League seasons with San Francisco (2021–22) and Chicago-AL (2023), going 2–4 with 5 saves, a 4.00 ERA (32 ER, 72.0 IP), 22 walks and 71 strikeouts. He was originally signed by the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent on August 28, 2015.
