Mariners Select INF Gordon Beckham from AAA Tacoma
Seattle places INF Robinson Canó on the 10-day disabled list
Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
· Gordon Beckham, INF, selected from AAA Tacoma.
· Robinson Canó, INF, placed on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand.
Beckham (#1) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (4:10 pm PT) game at the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
Seattle’s Major League, 40-man roster, is now at 39 players.
Beckham, 31, began the season with AAA Tacoma, where he hit .300 (27x90) with 17 runs, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 15 RBI, 19 walks, a .412 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging mark (.912 OPS) in 25 games. Among Pacific Coast League leaders, he ranks T13th in walks and 14th in on-base percentage and OPS. He has hit safely in 12-of-his-last-14 games with the Rainiers (4/17-c), batting .315 (17x54) with 9 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 10 RBI and 11 walks. Overall this season, Beckham has hit safely in 19-of-25 games, including 6 multi-hit games. He has appeared defensively at 2nd base (14 games, 13 starts), 3rd base (5 GS), shortstop (5 GS) and left field (1 GS).
The 6-foot, 190-pound utility infielder appeared in 11 games with the Mariners last season, batting .176 (3x17) with 2 runs, 1 walk and 1 stolen bases. He spent most of the 2017 campaign with AAA Tacoma, appearing in 83 games with the Rainiers and batting .262 (86x328) with 37 runs, 16 doubles, 9 home runs, 45 RBI and 20 walks. He originally signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on March 31, 2017 and was re-signed to a minor league contract on Dec. 8, 2017.
In parts of 9 Major League seasons with Chicago-AL (2009–14, 2015), Los Angeles-AL (2014), Atlanta (2016), San Francisco (2016) and Seattle (2017-c), he is a career .239 (751x3136) hitter with 173 doubles, 5 triples, 74 home runs and 335 RBI in 964 career games. Over his Major League career, he has made appearances defensively at 2nd base (699 games, 668 starts), 3rd base (210 G, 161 GS) and shortstop (28 G, 15 GS). The native of Atlanta, Georgia was a 1st round selection (8th overall) in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. In his rookie season of 2009, he hit .270 (102x378) with 28 doubles, 1 triple, 14 home runs, 63 RBI, a .347 on-base percentage and a .460 slugging percentage in 103 games, finishing 5th in the AL Rookie of the Year award voting.
Canó, 35, sustained a fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand after being hit by a pitch in the 3rd inning yesterday at Detroit. In 39 games with the Mariners this season, he is batting .287 (41x143) with 24 runs, 10 doubles, 4 home runs, 23 RBI, 21 walks, a .385 on-base percentage and a .441 slugging mark (.825 OPS). Among American League leaders, he ranks T13th in walks and 14th in on-base percentage. This marks just his second trip to the disabled list since June 27 — Aug. 8, 2006 when he missed 34 games with a strained left hamstring (also: 5/13–23/17 with a right quad strain). Since making his Major League debut on May 3, 2005, he has appeared in 2,037 games, most of any player in that span.
Since joining the Mariners for the 2014 season, he has hit .294 (768x2608) with 369 runs, 147 doubles, 5 triples, 101 home runs and 384 RBI in 662 games. He signed a 10-year contract through the 2023 season on Dec. 12, 2013 after playing nine seasons with New York-AL. In 14 Major League seasons, he is a career .304 (2417x7944) hitter with 1168 runs, 522 doubles, 33 triples, 305 home runs and 1,206 RBI in 2,036 career games.
