Mariners Recall RHP Riley O’Brien, Select LHP Danny Young

RHP Matt Brash optioned to Tacoma; RHP Matt Festa placed on 15-day IL; LHP Nick Margevicius designated for assignment; RHP Matt Koch cleared waivers, outrighted to Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

· Riley O’Brien, RHP, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

· Danny Young, LHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.

· Matt Brash, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game 5/4).

· Matt Festa, RHP, placed on 15-day Injured List (right elbow tendinitis; retroactive 5/4).

· Nick Margevicius, LHP, designated for assignment.

· Matt Koch, RHP, cleared waivers and outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.

O’Brien, 27, was acquired by Seattle from Cincinnati in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on April 16. The right-hander has appeared in 5 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, going 1–1 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 5.2 IP) with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts.

The Seattle native attended Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Washington and was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 8th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the College of Idaho. The 6-foot-4 righty has made 1 Major League appearance, making his debut in a start with Cincinnati on Sept. 28, 2021.

Young, 27, will make his Major League debut when he first appears in a game. The left-hander was signed by Seattle to a minor league contract on Feb. 9, 2022 and was invited to Major League Spring Training. He’s appeared in 9 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, going 0–0 with 1 save and a 7.00 ERA (7 ER, 9.0 IP) with 2 walks and 15 strikeouts.

Young was selected by Toronto in the 8th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida. He’s appeared in 7 minor league season in the Toronto (2015–19), Cleveland (2021) and Seattle (2022) organizations.

Brash, 23, has started 5 games with Seattle this season, going 1–3 with a 7.65 ERA (17 ER, 20.0 IP) with 17 walks and 19 strikeouts. He started the Mariners fifth game of the season, making his Major League debut on April 12 at the Chicago White Sox (5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO). In 2021, Brash went 6–4 with 1 save and a 2.31 ERA (25 ER, 97.1 IP) with 48 walks and 142 strikeouts in 20 games (19 starts) between High-A Everett and Double-A Arkansas.

Brash is ranked as the #45 prospect (Baseball America) and #98 prospect (MLB Pipeline) in the Majors. The 6-foot-1 righty was acquired by Seattle from San Diego on Sept. 17, 2020 as the player to be named later in a trade that sent RHP Taylor Williams to the Padres. The Kingston, Ontario native was originally selected by San Diego in the 4th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Niagara University (Lewiston, NY).

Festa, 29, has appeared in 11 games out of the Mariners bullpen this season, going 0–0 with a 5.25 ERA (7 ER, 12.0 IP) with 5 walks and 20 strikeouts. His 20 strikeouts lead Seattle relievers and rank 3rd-most in the Majors.

The right-hander has appeared in 3 Major League seasons (2018–19, ’22) with Seattle, going 0–2 with a 4.85 ERA (23 ER, 42.2 IP) with 19 walks and 45 strikeouts in 39 games (1 start). Festa underwent “Tommy John” surgery on March 5, 2020 and returned to action in August 2021 with Triple-A Tacoma. The Brooklyn native was selected by Seattle in the 7th round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Margevicius (\mahr-GAV-a-chiss\), 25, has made 4 starts with Triple-A Tacoma this season, going 0–1 with a 12.75 ERA (17 ER, 12.0 IP) with 4 walks and 11 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-5 left-hander has appeared in 3 Major League seasons with San Diego (2019) and Seattle (2020–21), going 4–11 with a 6.12 ERA (75 ER, 110.1 IP) with 40 walks and 90 strikeouts in 32 games (22 starts). Margevicius was placed on the 10-day, and then 60-day, Injured List on April 26, 2021 with left shoulder inflammation, where he spent the remainder of the season. He was claimed off waivers by Seattle from San Diego on Jan. 24, 2020 and was originally selected by the Padres in the 7th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Rider University (Lawrenceville, NJ).

Koch (\COOK\), 31, was designated for assignment on April 29. He appeared in 4 games with the Mariners this season, going 0–0 with an 8.41 ERA (4 ER, 4.1 IP) with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. He was selected from Triple-A Tacoma on April 13 after making 2 scoreless appearances with the Rainiers.

Koch was selected by the New York Mets in the 3rd round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville. He made his Major League debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sept. 9, 2016 vs. San Francisco. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with Arizona (2016–19) and Seattle (2022), going 6–6 with a 5.00 ERA (72 ER, 129.2 IP) with 32 walks and 72 strikeouts in 40 career appearances (16 starts).
