Mariners Recall C Luis Torrens From Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Luis Torrens, C, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Yohan Ramírez, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Torrens (#22) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game vs. Minnesota.

Torrens, 25, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 20. In 19 Triple-A games since May 21, his 6 home runs in Triple-A rank tied for 4th-most in Triple-A West, while his 19 RBI are tied for 2nd-most. In 29 games with the Mariners this season, he is batting .178 (16x90) with 7 runs, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI and 4. He was acquired by Seattle from San Diego on Aug. 31, 2020 along with Ty France (inf), Andres Munoz (rhp) and Taylor Trammell (of) in exchange for Austin Nola ©, Austin Adams (rhp) and Dan Altavilla (rhp).

Torrens originally signed as an international free agent with the New York Yankees on July 2, 2012. He made his Major League debut with San Diego on April 3, 2017 at Los Angeles-NL. Overall, the 6-foot, 208-pound, catcher has appeared in parts of 4 Major League seasons with San Diego (2017–20) and Seattle (2020–21), batting .192 (57x297) with 21 runs, 14 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 19 RBI and 25 walks in 117 career games.

Ramírez, 26, was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on June 12, but did not appear in a game. He was previously with Seattle from May 21–27, appearing in 2 games. In 2 games with the Mariners this season, the righty is 0–0 with a 6.75 ERA (3 ER, 4.0 IP) with 2 hits allowed, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. He’s appeared in 10 games with the Rainiers this season, going 0–0 with a 4.38 ERA (6 ER, 12.1 IP) with 10 hits allowed, 5 walks and 16 strikeouts. The right-hander made his Major League debut with Seattle on July 24, 2020 and is 0–0 with a 3.28 ERA (9 ER, 24.2 IP) and 3 saves with 11 hits allowed, 22 walks and 30 strikeouts in 18 relief appearances between 2020–21.

The Dominican Republic native was selected by Seattle in the Rule 5 draft (6th overall pick) from Houston on December 12, 2019. In his minor league career, he is 16–21 with a 3.75 ERA (126 ER, 302.0 IP) and 7 saves, with 222 hits allowed, 181 walks and 339 strikeouts in 98 games (40 starts).
