Mariners Outright Three Players To Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

· Nestor Cortes, LHP, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma; elected free agency.

· Carl Edwards Jr., RHP, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma; elected free agency.

· Matt Magill, RHP, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma; elected free agency.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains at 33.

Cortes, (25, turns 26 on Dec. 10), went 0–1 with a 15.26 ERA (13 ER, 7.2 IP) with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts in 5 games (1 start) with the Mariners in 2020. He was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left elbow impingement on Aug. 15 and missed the remainder of the season. On Aug. 31, he was transferred to the 45-day IL.

Cortes has appeared in parts of 3 Major League seasons with Baltimore (2018), New York-AL (2019) and Seattle (2020), compiling a record of 5–2 with 6.72 ERA (59 ER, 79.0 IP) with 80 strikeouts and 38 walks in 42 career games (2 GS). He was acquired by the Mariners from New York-AL in exchange for international bonus pool money on Nov. 25, 2019. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Hialeah High School in Hialeah, FL. He was selected by Baltimore from New York-AL in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft, and made his Major League debut with the Orioles on March 30, 2018 vs. Minnesota. He was returned to New York-AL on April 13, 2018.

Edwards Jr., 29, posted a 1.93 ERA (1 ER, 4.2 IP) over 5 appearances with the Mariners in 2020. He struck out 6 and walked 1 while allowing 2 hits. He was placed the 10-Day Injured List with a right forearm strain on Aug. 10 and missed the remainder of the season. On Aug. 27, he was transferred to the 45-day IL.

Edwards Jr. has appeared in parts of 6 Major League seasons with Chicago-NL (2015–19), San Diego (2019) and Seattle (2020), compiling a record of 9–8 with 3 saves and a 3.54 ERA (71 ER, 180.2 IP) with 242 strikeouts and 101 walks in 199 appearances. He signed with Seattle as a Major League free agent on Dec. 4, 2019. He was originally selected by Texas in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He was acquired by Chicago-NL on July 22, 2013 along with RHP Neil Ramirez, INF Mike Olt and RHP Justin Grimm in exchange for RHP Matt Garza. He spent 5 seasons with Chicago-NL (2015–2019) before being acquired by San Diego in exchange for LHP Brad Wieck on July 31, 2019.

Magill, 30 (turns 31 on Nov. 10), had an arthroscopic debridement surgery on his right shoulder on Sept. 15. The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Prior to the surgery, he was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right shoulder strain on Aug. 28, and was transferred to the 45-day Injured List on Aug. 30. He did not allow a run in his first 8 relief appearances this season (7/26–8/15), striking out 9 and walking 4 while limiting opponents to an .077 (2x26) average against in 8.0 scoreless innings. Magill finished the 2020 season 0–1 with a 6.10 ERA (7 ER, 10.1 IP) with 6 walks and 11 strikeouts over 11 relief appearances with the Mariners.

Magill was acquired by the Mariners in exchange for ­cash considerations in a trade with Minnesota on July 21, 2019. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Royal, HS (CA), and has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with Los Angeles-NL (2013), Cincinnati (2016), Minnesota (2018) and Seattle (2019–20). Overall, he is 8–8 with 5 saves and a 4.63 ERA (77 ER, 149.2 IP) with 82 walks and 158 strikeouts in 112 career appearances (6 starts).
