Phoenix, Ariz. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have outrighted outfielder Mallex Smith to Triple-A Tacoma.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 37 players.

Smith, 27, was optioned to Seattle’s alternate training site on Aug. 18 after batting .133 (6x45) with 2 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases in 14 games with the Mariners this season.

In 2019, Smith led the Major Leagues with 46 stolen bases, while batting .227 (116x510) with 70 runs scored, 19 doubles, 9 triples, 6 home runs, 37 RBI, 11 HBP and 42 walks in 124 games. Smith was acquired by the Mariners from Tampa Bay along with Jake Fraley (of) in exchange for Mike Zunino ©, Guillermo Heredia (of) and Michael Plassmeyer (lhp) on Nov. 8, 2018. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Braves (2016), Rays (2017–18) and Mariners (2019-c), Smith is batting .255 (378x1480) with 198 runs scored, 63 doubles, 27 triples, 13 home runs, 114 RBI and 120 stolen bases in 442 career games. The native of Tallahassee, FL, was originally selected by San Diego in the 5th round of the 2012 MLB Draft.
