Mariners Option INF/OF José Marmolejos and RHP Bryan Shaw to Alternate Training Site

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • José Marmolejos, INF/OF, optioned to alternate training site (post-game Aug. 5).
  • Bryan Shaw, RHP, optioned to alternate training site (post-game Aug. 5).

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners active roster is now at 28 players. Major League Baseball required all teams to reduce their roster to 28 active players by today.

Marmolejos, 27, made his Major League debut on Opening Day (7/24 at LAA) after being named to his first career Opening Day roster. He hit his first Major League home run on July 30 at LAA. In 8 games with the Mariners this season, he is batting .103 (3x29) with 1 run, 1 home run and 3 RBI. The 6-foot-2, 239-pound infielder/outfielder made his mark in Cactus League action this spring, posting an .881 OPS with 6 extra-base hits (2 home runs), 18 total bases, 8 RBI and 2 walks in 14 Spring Training games while playing both first base and left field.

Marmolejos was signed by the Mariners as a minor league free agent on Nov. 27, 2019 after spending nine seasons in Washington’s minor league system. Marmolejos was named the Nationals Minor League Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016. Over his nine minor league seasons, Marmolejos slashed .288/.354/.448 (883x3071) with 72 home runs, 215 doubles, 31 triples, 302 walks, 443 runs scored and 469 RBI, and played in 840 minor league games.

Shaw, 32, has made a Major League-leading 577 relief appearances over the last nine seasons (2012-c), making at least 60 appearances in every season from 2012–19 and at least 70 appearances in six of eight seasons during that span. In 4 appearances this season, he is 1–0 with a 27.00 ERA (10 ER, 3.1 IP), while striking out 1 and walking 4. He originally signed with Seattle as a free agent on July 23.

Shaw was originally selected by Arizona in the 2nd round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University. He graduated from Livermore (CA) High School, the same high school as former Mariner left-hander and Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. Shaw made his Major League debut with the Dia­mondbacks on June 10, 2011 at the Marlins. On Dec. 11, 2012, he was a part of a three-team, eight-player trade that sent Shaw, along with Trevor Bauer (rhp) and Matt Albers (rhp), to Cleveland, Shin-Soo Choo (of) and Jason Donald (inf) to Cincinnati and Didi Gregorius (inf), Lars Anderson (inf) and Tony Sipp (lhp) to Arizona.

In parts of 10 Major League seasons with Arizona (2011–12), Cleveland (2013–17) Colorado (2018–19) and Seattle (2020), Shaw has compiled a career record of 31–36 with 12 saves and a 3.81 ERA (244 ER, 576.1 IP) with 511 strikeouts and 212 walks in 610 relief appearances. From 2013–16, he was one of the most effective relievers in the American League, posting a 3.00 ERA (94 ER, 282.0 IP) while striking out 260 in 299 relief outings with Cleveland. Shaw has made 19 relief appearances over six postseason series, compiling a record of 2–1 with a 2.45 ERA (6 ER, 22.0 IP) with 22 strikeouts and 6 walks.
