Mariners Open 2024 Spring Training With 8–7 Loss Against The White Sox

Samad Taylor launches homer, Locklear, Clase each record multi-hit games in Cactus League opener

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Mariners opened Cactus League play today with an 8–7 walk-off loss against the Chicago White Sox at Camelback Ranch.

Seven of the Mariners Top 30 prospects according to Baseball America appeared in today’s game: Cole Young (No. 2 ranked prospect), Tyler Locklear (No. 5), Jonatan Clase (No. 10), Alberto Rodriguez (No. 17), Spencer Packard (No. 20), Brock Rodden (No. 22) and Hogan Windish (No. 24).

Locklear (3x3, 2 1B, 2B), Rodriguez (1x2, R, RBI, BB), Clase (2x2, 2 R, 1B, 2B, RBI, SB) and Windish (1x3, R, RBI) all reached base safely, while Young (0x2, SF, RBI) drove in the Mariners first run.

The White Sox opened the scoring on an RBI single by Brett Phillips in the 6th inning. The Mariners answered in the 7th, with a Young sacrifice fly before Samad Taylor launched a home run onto the berm in left-center field to tie the game at 2 later in the inning.

The White Sox and Mariners went back-and-forth in the final innings, with Chicago rallying in the ninth for a walk-off win.

Right-hander Casey Lawrence started on the mound for Seattle, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Jackson Kowar (1.0 IP, 2 K) and Mauricio Llovera (1.0 IP) each retired the side in order, while Collin Snider (1.0 IP, BB) tossed a scoreless inning, in relief of Lawrence.

The Mariners return to action at Peoria Stadium against the Cleveland Guardians tomorrow, Sunday, February 25 at 12:10 PT/1:10 MT. Left-hander Jhonathan Díaz is scheduled to make his first start of the spring for Seattle, while right-hander Tyler Beede takes the ball for the Guardians.
