TRIPLE-A TACOMA RAINIERS

RECAP: The Rainiers opened the 2022 season with a 4–2 win over Salt Lake on Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium. Starter Darren McCaughan (5.2,7,2,2,2,5) allowed 2 run on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5 over 5.2 innings, but did not factor into the decision. Relievers Kyle Bird (0.1,1,0,0,1,1), RH Matt Koch (1.0,0,0,0,0,3) and RH Penn Murfee (2.0,0,0,0,2,5) combined to allow only 1 hit while walking 3 and striking out 9 over 3.1 innings in relief. Bird earned his first win of the season, while Murfee picked up the save with a scoreless 8th and 9th innings. Koch tossed an immaculate 7th innings, striking out 3 batters on 9 pitches. CF Taylor Trammell (2x4, R, 2B, BB) and 1B Zach Green (2x3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) each led the Rainiers with 2 hits, while LF Forrest Wall (1x4, R), 2B Erick Mejia (1x2, BB) and C Josh Morgan (1x3, R, HR, RBI) each collected 1 of the Rainiers 7 hits. Morgan homered his his AAA debut with a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.

RAINIERS COACHING STAFF Tim Federowicz (fed-er-oh-vich) begins his first season in the Mariners organization as manager of the Tacoma Rainiers. Federowicz appeared in 8 Major League seasons with Los Angeles-NL (2011–14), Chicago-NL (2016), San Francisco (2017), Houston (2018), Cincinnati (2018) and Texas (2019). The former catcher also appeared in 878 career minor league games, batting .286 (914x3194) with 100 home runs and 504 RBI. The Apex, North Carolina native attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 7th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Brad Marcelino begins his first season in the Mariners organization as hitting coach for Triple-A Tacoma. He has been working as a private hitting instructor in the San Diego area since 2018, working with several professional and collegiate players. Prior to that, Marcelino served as hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of San Diego for 7 seasons (2012–18). Alon Leichman (ah-lone LIKE-man) begins his sixth season in the Mariners organization and his first as pitching coach for Triple-A Tacoma. Leichman spent the last 2 seasons (2020–21) as pitching coach for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers, and prior to that spent 2019 as pitching coach for A West Virginia, 2018 as pitching coach for the DSL Mariners and 2017 as Coordinator of Organizational Learning. Zach Vincej (VINCE-ee) begins his first season as a coach in the Mariners organization. He appeared in 10 Major League games, 9 with Cincinnati (2017) and 1 with the Mariners (2018). Vincej was selected by Cincinnati in the 37th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Pepperdine University. Michael Feliciano, ATC begins his fifth season in the Mariners organization and his first as athletic trainer for Triple-A Tacoma. Michael Sadler begins his first as strength and conditioning coach for the Rainiers, spending 2021 as strength and conditioning coach for Double-A Arkansas.
