Mariners Claim RHP Domingo Tapia Off Waivers from Boston

29-year-old relief pitcher pitched 4.1 innings with the Red Sox in 2020

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have claimed right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 34 players.

Tapia, 29, appeared in 5 games with Boston in 2020, posting a 2.08 ERA (1 ER, 4.1 IP) with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. He made his Major League debut on Sept. 11 at Tampa Bay. From Sept. 16 through the end of the season, Tapia threw 3.1 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts. According to Baseball Savant, 63 of the 80 pitches he threw in 2020 were four-seam fastballs (33 pitches, with an average velocity of 99.2 mph) or sinkers (30 pitches, average velocity of 98.5 mph).

The 6-foot-3, 263-pound right-hander spent the entirety of 2019 with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he went 5–4 with 2 saves and a 5.18 ERA (38 ER, 66.0 IP) in 44 games (1 start).

Over 10 minor league seasons, Tapia has made 242 minor league appearances (102 starts) in the New York Mets (2010–16), Cincinnati Reds (2017–18), and Boston Red Sox (2019) organizations, going 38–50 with a 4.14 ERA (315 ER, 685.0 IP). Tapia was originally signed as an international free agent in 2010 by New York-NL.
