SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have claimed infielder/outfielder Sam Haggerty off waivers from New York-NL.

Seattle’s 40-man roster is now full at 40 players.

Haggerty, 25, was designated for assignment by New York-NL on December 24 and placed on unconditional release waivers January 8. The switch-hitting utilityman made his Major League debut on Sept. 4, 2019 at Washington and played in a total of 11 games with the Mets, scoring a pair of runs in 4 plate appearances. He covered three levels of the Mets’ minor league system in 2019, spending the majority in Double-A Binghamton, where he slashed .259/.370/.356 (64x247, .726 OPS) by going 64-for-247 with 15 extra-base hits,19 stolen bases and was named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star. Haggerty was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on August 19, where he played in 12 games and batted .310 (13x42) with a .907 OPS, earning his promotion to the Majors Sept. 1. In 2019 alone, Haggerty made minor league appearances defensively at second base (31), center field (25), left field (10), third base (6), shortstop (5) and right field (1), as well as 1 Major League appearance each at second base and right field.

Haggerty has appeared in 5 minor league seasons with Cleveland (2015–18) and New York-NL (2019). He was originally drafted by Cleveland in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of New Mexico. After spending 4 seasons in Cleveland’s minor league system, Haggerty was traded to the Mets with minor league right-handed pitcher Walker Lockett in exchange for catcher Kevin Plawecki on January 6, 2019. In parts of 5 minor league seasons, he is a career .249 (357x1431) hitter with 82 doubles, 27 triples, 15 home runs, 143 RBI and 113 stolen bases.
