Mariners Acquire Zach Muckenhirn from New York Mets

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today that the Mariners have acquired LHP Zach Muckenhirn from the New York Mets in exchange for RHP Trevor Gott and RHP Chris Flexen.

The Mariners Major League, 40-man roster is at 40 players.

Muckenhirn, 28, will report to Triple-A Tacoma. He was designated for assignment by New York-NL on July 2. The left-handed pitcher has made 3 appearances with the Mets, going 0–0 with a 6.00 ERA (4 ER, 6.0 IP), 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. He made his Major League debut on May 3, 2023 tossing 1.2 scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers.

The Delano, Minnesota native was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons, going 22–22 with a 3.59 ERA (162 ER, 405.2 IP), 406 strikeouts 150 walks and 17 saves in 217 games (25 starts).

Gott, 30, made 30 appearances with the Mariners, going 0–3 with a 4.03 ERA (13 ER, 29.0 IP), 8 walks and 32 strikeouts this season. Gott signed a 1-year contract with Seattle on November 30, 2022.

Gott has appeared in 8 Major League seasons with Los Angeles-AL (2015), Washington (2016–18), San Francisco (2019–20), Milwaukee (2022) and Seattle (2023). In 221 career games, he is 16–13 with 5 saves and a 4.70 ERA (112 ER, 214.2 IP) with 77 walks and 192 strikeouts. He was originally selected by San Diego in the 6th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Kentucky.

Flexen, 28, was designated for assignment on June 27. He went 0–4 with a 7.71 ERA (36 ER, 42.0 IP) with 19 walks and 29 strikeouts in 17 games (4 starts) with the Mariners this season.

Flexen appeared in 3 seasons with Seattle (2021–23), going 22–19 with 2 saves and a 4.13 ERA (165 ER, 359.1 IP) with 110 walks and 249 strikeouts.

The right-hander was one of the best starting pitchers in the American League in 2021, going 14–6 with a 3.61 ERA (72 ER, 179.2 IP) with 40 walks and 125 strikeouts in 31 starts, leading the team with 15 quality starts. He was signed by Seattle to a Major League contract on Dec. 18, 2020 after a successful 2020 campaign with the Doosan Bears in the KBO of South Korea.

Flexen has appeared in 6 Major League seasons with New York-NL (2017–19) and Seattle (2021-c). In 108 career games (68 starts), he is 25–30 with 2 saves and a 4.76 ERA (226 ER, 427.1 IP) with 164 walks and 298 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Mets in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Memorial High School in Newark, California.
