Mariners Activate Jake Fraley from Injured List; Claim Marcus Wilson off Waivers

ST. PETERSBURG, FL. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Jake Fraley, OF, returned from rehabilitation assignment and activated from Injured List.
  • Marcus Wilson, OF, claimed off waivers from Boston
  • Wilson optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Shed Long Jr., INF/OF, placed on 10-day Injured List (right shin stress reaction).
  • Dillon Thomas, OF, designated for assignment.

The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster is full at 40 players.

Fraley, 26, appeared in 4 games with the Tacoma Rainiers on his current rehab assignment. He hit .273 (3x11) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI while walking 4 times. He posted a .409 on-base percentage while batting .237 (27x114) with 18 runs, 2 doubles, 7 home runs, 23 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 33 walks in 40 games with the Mariners this season when he was placed on the Injured List on July 18.

His .409 on-base percentage is 9th-highest in the Majors among players with at least 140 plate appearances this season.

The left-handed hitting outfielder was on the 10-day Injured List earlier this season from April 7-May 30 with a left hamstring strain. Fraley has recorded two walk-offs this season, a bases loaded walk on Opening Night, April 1 vs. San Francisco and a walk-off single on July 2 vs. Texas.

Fraley was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2nd round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University. He was acquired by Seattle from Tampa Bay along with Mallex Smith (of) in exchange for Mike Zunino ©, Guillermo Heredia (of) and Michael Plassmeyer (lhp). In 4 minor league seasons with the Rays (2016–18) and Mariners (2019-c), he has hit .288 (272x944) with 158 runs, 62 doubles, 20 triples, 28 home runs, 155 RBI, 72 stolen bases and 100 walks.

Wilson, 24, will report to Triple-A Tacoma. He was designated for assignment by Boston on July 31. Wilson made the jump from High-A in 2019 to Triple-A in 2021 despite having no season in 2020 due to covid. He was hitting .242 (53x219) with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs and a .370 on-base percentage with a .452 slugging mark (OPS: 822) in 64 games with AAA Worcester this year.

He was originally selected in the 2nd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Junipero (Gardena, CA) High School . In seven minor league seasons (2014–21), he’s a career .256 hitter with 112 doubles, 18 triples and 50 home runs in 562 career games.

Long Jr., 25, was hitting .198 (22x111) with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs and 17 RBI in 34 games with the Mariners since being activated from the Injured List on June 8. He appeared in 7 games on Major League rehab assignment with Tacoma prior to being added to the Mariners roster, batting .323 (10x31) with 8 runs, 3 doubles, 1 home run, 2 RBI and 5 walks. The infielder began the season on the 10-day Injured List and was transferred to the 60-day Injured List on April 27.

The Alabama native has appeared in 110 big league games with Seattle (2019–21), batting .216 (82x380) with 44 runs, 21 doubles, 2 triples, 12 home runs, 41 RBI, 8 steals and 36 walks. He made his MLB debut May 11, 2019 at Fenway Park.

Long Jr. was acquired by the Mariners from the New York Yankees in exchange for minor league outfielder Josh Stowers on Jan. 21, 2019. Long Jr. was traded from Cincinnati to New York-AL earlier that day. He was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Jacksonville (AL) High School.

Thomas, 28, has had two stints with Seattle this season, last July 18–20. He appeared in 2 games in his second stint with the Mariners, going 0-for-1. Overall, he’s appeared in 4 games with Seattle this season, going 1-for-9 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

He made his Major League debut on June 9 after being selected from Triple-A Tacoma on June 8, collecting a 2-run single in the 11th inning at Detroit in his debut. In 61 games with the Rainiers this season, he is batting .273 (59x216) with 46 runs, 13 doubles, 9 home runs, 30 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 26 walks.

Thomas signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on Jan. 14, 2021 and received an invite to Major League Spring Training. He was originally selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Westbury Christian School (TX). Overall, has appeared in parts of 10 minor league seasons in the Rockies (2011–2017), Brewers (2018–19) and Mariners organizations (2021).
