Castillo Pitches 2 scoreless innings against former team

Goodyear, Ariz. — The Mariners won their first game of spring, defeating the Cincinnati Reds by a 2–0 score this afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark.

Seattle starter Luis Castillo pitched a clean game against his former team, pitching 2 innings with 1 walk and 1 strikeout in his spring training debut.

In the top of the eighth, Cole Young broke the scoreless tie with a double to deep center field driving in Cole Tucker and Nick Solak to put the Mariners up 2–0.

Seattle’s pitching dominated most of the matchups keeping a no-hitter until the bottom of the 8th inning, after Mariners pitcher Reid VanScoter gave up a single to Reds outfielder Jacob Hurtubise for Cincinnati’s only hit of the game.

Seattle’s pitchers Luis Castillo (2.0 IP), Austin Voth (1.0 IP), Heath Hembree (1.0 IP), Joey Krehbiel (1.0 IP) and Reid VanScoter (2.0 IP) all contributed to the 1-hit game this afternoon.

The Mariners travel to Scottsdale to take on the San Francisco Giants tomorrow afternoon, with the matchup set for a 1:05 p.m. MT first pitch. Right-hander George Kirby is set to take the mound for the first time this spring for the Mariners, with the Giants set to counter with starter Jordan Hicks.
