With the start of the 2020 season delayed due to the COVID-19 response, ROOT SPORTS NW and 710 ESPN Seattle will feature encore broadcasts of classic Mariners games each night at 7:00 pm PT throughout the next several weeks. A full schedule of the broadcasts is available at Mariners.com/Classics.

Tonight’s featured game on 710 ESPN Seattle is the Mariners 10-run comeback win over the Padres, the largest comeback win in club history — June 2, 2016 at San Diego.

The Mariners got off to an inauspicious start on June 2, 2016 at San Diego, trailing the Padres, 12–2, after five innings. But the Mariners stormed back, scoring five runs in the 6th inning and nine runs in the 7th inning in staging the largest comeback win in club history.

Dae-Ho Lee played a key role in the Mariners come-from-behind win, going 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI off the bench. Lee’s pinch-hit, three-run home run in the 6th inning cut the Padres lead to 12–7.

After loading the bases in the top of the 7th, the Mariners reeled off seven consecutive 2-out RBI singles to plate nine runs and take a 16–12 lead over San Diego. The Mariners were the first Major League team since 1974 to post seven straight 2-out RBI singles.

With the 16–13 victory, the Mariners became just the 7th visiting team in MLB history to overcome a double-digit deficit to win and the 21st overall to come back and win having trailed by 10 or more runs after 5 innings.

Audio Highlights

Gary Hill and Aaron Goldsmith chat about Goldsmith’s memories of the Mariners 16–13 win over the Padres. Goldsmith was on the call as the Mariners scored 14 runs between the 6th and 7th innings.

Notes

  • Seattle’s comeback win marked the first comeback win in the Major Leagues when the winning team trailed by 10+ runs after 5 innings since Cleveland defeated Seattle, 15–14, in 11 innings, on August 5, 2001 in Cleveland. It also marked the first 9-inning comeback win in the Majors when the winning team trailed by 10+ runs after 5 innings since Philadelphia came back from a 11–1 deficit after 7 innings to defeat Los Angeles-NL, 12–11, on August 21, 1990 at Los Angeles.
  • Seattle’s 9-run 7th inning marked a club record for runs scored in an inning without an extra-base hit.
  • Seattle scored 9 runs with 2 outs in the 7th inning, the 2nd-most runs scored with 2 outs in club history, trailing only 10 runs with 2 outs in the 5th on August 30, 2003 vs. Baltimore.
  • Since 1974, the Mariners are the only team to have 2 or fewer extra-base hits while overcoming a double-digit deficit to win (Seattle recorded 3 extra-base hits overall, but only 2 while scoring 14 runs over final 4 innings).
  • The Mariners were 11-for-12 with 15 RBI with runners in scoring position.
  • The Mariners recorded a club-record 8 RBI by players off the bench (previous: 6 RBI, 9/8/02 at KC). Coming off the bench, the Mariners combined to go 6-for-9 with 5 runs, 1 home run, 8 RBI and 1 walk.
