Throughout the 1995 season, few players came through in clutch situations more often than Edgar Martinez. The postseason was no different.
Edgar belted 2 home runs and drove in 7 runs in Game 4 of the 1995 American League Division Series vs. the Yankees, becoming the first player in postseason history to record 7 RBI in a single game.
Radio Post-Game Show
Rick Rizzs hosted the post-game show following the Mariners victory in Game 4, taking you inside the clubhouse to hear from Lou Piniella and Yankees manager Buck Showalter. Ron Fairly also caught up with Edgar — the hero of Game 4 — inside the Mariners third base dugout.
“We needed this game so bad,” Martinez told Fairly. “I’m just so happy that I came through and my teammates, too. All the guys contributed. I’m just happy that we’re playing tomorrow.”

Edgar’s historic 7-RBI performance started with a 3-run home run off Scott Kamieniecki in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
“When he’s on the mound, they pitch me inside a lot,” Martinez said to Fairly. “I was concentrating early in the count, looking for something inside. I was able to make good contact.”
In the 8th inning, Edgar’s grand slam untied a 6–6 deadlock and assured the Mariners of a Game 5 the following day.
“It was a great game. You know what it means for us — we’re playing tomorrow. It should be a great game tomorrow.” — Edgar Martinez

Mariners manager Lou Piniella applauded the effort of side-arming right-hander Jeff Nelson, who tossed 4.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and of course, the timely hitting of Edgar Martinez.
“There’s no quit here,” Piniella said. “When we got down, 5–0, we figured we were still in the ballgame. Edgar got us right back in it in a hurry.”
Grand Salami Time
Martinez’ grand slam off John Wetteland was the first go-ahead grand slam in the 8th inning or later in postseason history.
“2-and-2 on Edgar. And John Wetteland, one more time, set and here comes the 2–2 pitch to Edgar Martinez now…and a fastball, SWUNG ON AND HIT TO DEEP CENTER FIELD, Bernie Williams goes back and it is…GET OUT THE RYE BREAD AND THE MUSTARD THIS TIME, GRANDMA. IT IS A GRAND SALAMI AND THE MARINERS LEAD IT, 10–6. I DON’T BELIEVE IT! MY OH MY!” — Dave Niehaus
