Mariners honor veterans on Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, as we remember the men and women of the Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, the Seattle Mariners will be paying tribute to veterans during a special pregame ceremony.

Nearly 30 Western Washington veterans from various branches of the military will be introduced pregame and the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Major Harold Wanamaker of the U.S. Air Force. Major Wanamaker, who now lives in Bothell, served in Europe in World War II as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator bomber that flew missions out of Italy.

On his 14th mission, to bomb a rail road bridge in Avignon, France, Wanamaker’s plane was shot down and he and eight fellow crewmembers were taken prisoner by the Germans. Wanamaker, who was wounded, was held for nine months in various hospitals and POW camps in France and Germany, including Stalag VII A at Moosburg, Germany. Wanamaker and his fellow POWs were liberated by General Patton and the U.S. 14th Armored Division on April 29, 1945.

During the mid-4th inning break, Third Class U.S. Navy Petty Officer Arthur Barnes, also a World War II veteran, will be honored with a special Salute to Those Who Serve tribute on MarinersVision. Barnes, who now lives in Bellingham, was stationed on the battleship U.S.S. Tennessee off the coast of Japan in April 1945 when they came under a fierce attack from a squad of suicide bombers. A direct hit on the bridge of the ship by one of the enemy aircraft left 22 U.S. servicemen killed or mortally wounded and more than 100 injured.

A non-profit organization “created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices” will be at Safeco Field on Memorial Day to help raise awareness of their mission.

Representatives from Puget Sound Honor Flight will be at Section 128 on the Main Concourse with information about the organization and to accept donation to help fund the organization. Honor Flight’s mission is to “transport our heroes on ‘One Last Mission’” to Washington D.C. to visit and reflect at memorials built in their honor. The trip is free to the veterans and is made possible through individual donations and corporate support.

At Section 128, fans can also write thank you letters to veterans which will be delivered to them as they return from their trip to Washington D.C.

On Monday, May 26, as we commemorate Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance of the men and women who have died serving in the United States Armed Forces, the Seattle Mariners are proud to join Major League Baseball in this tribute.

On Memorial Day, the Mariners host the Los Angeles Angels for a 1:10pm game. At approximately 3pm PDT, the game will be halted to observe a Moment of Remembrance. Since 1997, MLB has participated in the National Moment of Remembrance by briefly pausing all games being played on Memorial Day in a collective, unified expression of gratitude to those who served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice.

All MLB teams playing on Monday will wear special caps and jerseys that feature the U.S. Marine Corps “Desert Digital” camouflage pattern. The caps feature the design on the crown, with team logos and “team color” on the bill. The jerseys have the camo design on the lettering on the front and back.

The limited edition caps and replica jerseys will be sold at the Safeco Field Flagship Team Store and select locations at the ballpark. The caps will sell for $34 and the jerseys for $85. All net proceeds from the sales of the two items will benefit the Welcome Back Veterans Fund, a Major League Baseball partner organization that provides grants to hospitals throughout the country that provide post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment to veterans and their families.

In addition to the replica on-field cap and jersey, there will also be a special Majestic Mariners T-shirt in navy with Desert Digital camo pattern inside the lettering on the front. The cost is $25 for adult sizes and $20 for youth.

All of MLB will join the National Moment of Remembrance, an initiative the league has participated in since 1997, where all games will stop for a moment of silence at 3:00 pm.

The Memorial Day effort is part of MLB’s ongoing recognition of veterans, active military, and military families…MLB has committed $23 million to Welcome Back Veterans ( since its inception in 2008. MLB will donate 100% of its net proceeds from sales of the caps and jerseys to Welcome Back Veterans as part of its contribution to the program.

The Mariners are 21-13 (.636) on Memorial Day, the best winning percentage on this holiday among all MLB teams (COL – .619/13-8, NYY – .576/91-67).
