Today the Mariners re-acquired slugging outfielder Mike Morse from the Washington Nationals, via a three-way trade that sent catcher John Jaso to the Oakland Athletics.
A lot of Mariners fans will remember Morse from his first go-around in a Mariners uniform from 2005-2008. Since he left Seattle, Morse has quietly became one of the best-kept secrets in baseball combining for 64 home runs and 198 RBI in 346 games over the last three seasons (2010-2012). In 2011, Morse hit .303 with 36 doubles, 31 home runs and 95 RBI. Those marks made him one of six players in the Majors to hit at least .300 with 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 90 RBI. The other five players were Miguel Cabrera, Matt Kemp, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ryan Braun and Troy Tulowitzki.
Last season Morse missed the first two months of the season with a right lateral strain, but still managed to club 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 102 games.
And for those keeping track at home, Morse will wear #38 for the Mariners in 2013. RHP Jeremy Bonderman will switch to #32 when the club hits the field for spring training in Peoria.
The Seattle Mariners 2013 Winter Caravan kicked off earlier this week with John Jaso, Mike Carp, Dan Wilson, Dave Sims and the Mariner Moose making stops in Covington, Tacoma and Lacey. Here are some photos captured by team photographer Ben Van Houten.
Last night was one of those memorable night’s at the ballpark that fans will remember for a long time. Whether it was the dominating performance by Felix Hernandez, in which he tied his career-high with 13 strikeouts, or the great catches by Casper Wells and Michael Saunders in the outfield, and of course the walk-off single by John Jaso to deliver a 1-0 victory over Boston.
Here are some video highlight’s of last night’s 1-0 victory over the Red Sox:
