Mariners Mondays – The King’s Court x2

The King's Court.

The King’s Court.

This week on Mariners Mondays on ROOT Sports a look back at two of Felix Hernandez’s gems, including the remarkable Supreme Court Night, Felix’s first home start after the perfect game.

Felix was in King’s Court form at Yankee Stadium on August 4 for his third shutout of the season, a 1-0, two-hit win over the Yankees. It was Felix’s second shutout in five starts at the new Yankee Stadium and it pushed his career ERA there to 1.13, the lowest of any pitcher with at least two starts there.

And of course, we all know that two starts later, Felix threw a perfect game at Safeco Field against the Tampa Bay Rays. Felix’s next scheduled start at Safeco was to be just as memorable.

A sea of 39,000 yellow Supreme Court T-shirts greeted the King when he took the mound on August 21 against the Cleveland Indians. And although he wasn’t perfect, Felix was still dominant with only one run and five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. A four-run 7th inning helped the Mariners to a 5-1 win over the Indians, the Mariners 7th straight victory.

Mariners Mondays looks back at both these great pitching performances tonight on ROOT SPORTS.

What Felix Means to the Mariners

This pretty much sums up how we feel about King Felix!

Seattle Mariners right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez has been named the American League Player of the Week for August 13-19.

Hernandez tossed the 23rd Perfect Game in Major League history on Aug. 15 vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, retiring all 27 batters faced. He struck out 12, and recorded the first Perfect Game in Seattle franchise history, the fourth no-hitter. The 1-0 win was also his third 1-0 victory of the season, setting a Mariners team record.

In recognition of his American League Player of the Week Award, Hernandez will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at

This is Felix’s first career weekly honor. He is the second Mariner to garner the award this season, joining Justin Smoak for the week ending June 3. Felix is the first Mariners pitcher to be named Player of the Week since Joel Pineiro on May 7, 2006.

To celebrate perfection, the Mariners are turning Safeco Field into the “Supreme Court” on Tuesday, as Felix Hernandez takes the mound for his first start since the Perfect Game. The usual “King’s Court” section in left field is expanding to the “Supreme Court” for this game, as the first 34,000 (in honor of Felix’s uniform number, 34) fans entering the ballpark will receive a special “King of Perfection” t-shirt and commemorative “K” card with a photo from the perfect game on the back side.

It is always best to get your tickets ahead of time to avoid possible lines on the night of game. Fans are eager to congratulate Hernandez so a good crowd is expected.

Tickets for all Mariners games are available in advance without no service charge at the Safeco Field Box Office, and at all Seattle Mariners Team Stores (4th and Stewart in downtown Seattle, Bellevue Square, Southcenter Mall and Alderwood Mall).
