Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 30

Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 30:

Thursday, March 13, 2014 / 18 Days ‘til Opening Night (March 31 at Los Angeles Angels) / 26 Days ‘til Opening Night in Seattle (April 8 vs. Angels)

Game Recap vs. the Diamondbacks:
The Seattle Mariners defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 in Cactus League action Thursday in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,611 at Salt River Fields.

Starting pitcher Blake Beavan set the tone for the game, working 4.2 innings and allowing just 1 run while scattering 5 hits and striking out 4. His only run allowed came in the fourth inning when, working with a 4-0 lead, he allowed a leadoff double that came around to score on a pair of outs. Beavan improved to 2-0 this spring, and lowered his earned run average to 2.13.

Second baseman Robinson Cano was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. He is now batting .609 this spring (14-for-23). Logan Morrison, playing first base today, was also 2-for-4 and slugged his first home run of the spring to boost Seattle’s lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning.

Taijuan Feels Good:
Taijuan Walker threw a 25-pitch bullpen session this morning, and said it “was a great relief. I finally feel normal again. I can finally go out and just be normal and play catch and not worry about anything. I’m excited. It kind of feels like I just got here. It feels really good.”

Taijuan Walker is progressing and threw a bullpen this morning.

Aaron Goldsmith Staying Busy
If you’re watching the Pac-12 tournament at some point in the next few days, you might hear a familiar voice. Mariners play-by-play man Aaron Goldsmith will be calling the ASU vs. Stanford game tonight, the late game on Friday, as well as the Championship Game on Saturday afternoon. No doubt Ryan Divish will be glued to the television somewhere watching all the action.

Aaron Goldsmith will call some games during the Pac-12 Tourney the next few days.

Hall of Fame Coin:
This news item has been making its rounds on the internet, but we think it is pretty cool, so we will also share with you. The United States mint in San Francisco will soon produce an unusual coin in honor of the nation’s favorite pastime…with a curved coin. The coin commemorates the Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2014. The National Baseball Hall of Fame Coins are scheduled to go on sale at noon on March 27, 2014.

Contacto Deportivo/Republica Deportiva
Lindsay Casinelli with Univision’s Contacto Deportivo/Republica Deportiva has been making the rounds at Spring Training and today landed in Peoria to interview Robinson Cano. Once the guys were done with their workout, Robinson made it over to the camera and sat down for a brief 10-minute interview. Sounds like they are also heading to Seattle in a few months, so we’ll be seeing them again this summer.

Mariners All-Access
Mariners All Access debuts at 7 p.m. tonight on ROOT Sports and will be hosted by Brad Adam.

  • Meet the Mariners new coaching staff.  The team that will help Lloyd McClendon during the season.
  • James Paxton talks about his offseason program and what it could mean for his chance to join the rotation
  • Highlights of Blake Beavan against the Diamondbacks as he makes his case for a starting spot

Jack Wilson in Camp:
Former Mariners infielder Jack Wilson visited the clubhouse today, saying hello to old teammates and checking out the new spring training facility. Jack is retired, last playing in the Majors with Atlanta in 2012. He appeared in 154 games for the Mariners from 2009-2011. He is currently keeping busy coaching his oldest son’s (Jacob) baseball team in Thousand Oaks, California. And since we haven’t seen Jack in a few years, we finally had the chance to ask him about his famous YouTube video of kicking a soccer ball to a moving jet ski. Jack said he grew up playing a lot of “jet ski football” and the video only took three takes to make. Check it out.

What’s on Tap:
The Mariners (13-4-1) will play a night game tomorrow night against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. You can hear all the action on 710 ESPN Seattle with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith calling the action. Right-hander Felix Hernandez (1-0, 8.31) is scheduled to start for the Mariners vs. Rockies left-hander Franklin Morales.

Lots to see on TV the next couple of days. Saturday’s game vs. the San Francisco Giants will be a ROOT SPORTS NW telecast as well as Tuesday against the San Diego Padres, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers on the call.

Players continue to make the rounds on the local and national radio programs this spring, so keep an eye out for Danny Farquhar on the Bob & Groz show at some point while you can tune in to the Wyman, Mike and Moore Show to catch Charlie Furbush at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. Once those interviews are up, we’ll post links to them on the Podcast page on this blog. Click, listen and enjoy!

Here are today’s Game Notes & Statistics…and a bonus quote of the day from Raul Ibañez :

“Try to enjoy it as much as you can, because, 41 years old, you can’t play this forever. Try to use that approach to play the game and try to hopefully share that approach with the younger guys and say, time goes by really fast and just enjoy it. That’s the one thing … you guys know me. I’m always preparing and running around and doing stuff. I think now is finally where I’m kind of enjoying it, taking it in … like I said, 41, you can’t play forever and enjoy it as much as you can every day.” – Raul Ibañez
