Acta Honored for Community Service
Mariners 3rd base coach Manny Acta has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Brooks Robinson Community Service Award, the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced yesterday. Acta will be honored at the 17th Annual Legends for Youth Dinner on November 15 in New York City.
The Brooks Robinson Community Service Award is presented annually by the Alumni Association to the current or former Major Leaguer who exemplifies the unselfish and humble attitude of Brooks Robinson through youth-oriented community service.
In 2007, Acta founded the impACTA Kids Foundation, which focuses on providing opportunities for children in the United States and the Dominican Republic by emphasizing the importance of education, health and athletics. The Alumni Association has teamed up with the impACTA Kids Foundation to host free youth baseball clinics in the Dominican Republic since 2011.
The 2016 season marked Acta’s 12th year as a Major League coach or manager and his first year as a coach with the Mariners.
In addition to honoring Acta at the Legends for Youth Dinner, the Alumni Associtation will also present Phil Niekro with the Lifetime Achievement Award and announce this year’s national Heart and Hustle Award recipient. Nelson Cruz is the Mariners nominee for the 2016 Heart and Hustle Award.
Previous winners of the Brooks Robinson Community Service Award include former Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer.
