24 Stories – The Year 2027
Every Hall of Fame inductee has a bronze plaque, but Ken Griffey Jr. is likely the only one with a shiny glove. On July 18, 1998, the Mariners and Royals took part in Turn Ahead the Clock Night, as the Kingdome was transformed into the Biodome and the clocks were turned ahead to 2027. With the Mariners and Royal donning futuristic uniforms, Junior spray-painted his glove silver and convinced his teammates to wear their hats backwards. Today, Junior’s silver glove is a part of his display at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
#12 – The Year 2027
“I remember sitting in the Kingdome dugout and Junior came by and saying to him, ‘What if we went into the future? What if we turned the clocks forward?’ He immediately bought in. Junior helped design the uniforms, helped get the umpires on board and really set the tone in the clubhouse for full participation. On the day of the game, I remember walking into the clubhouse and Junior has Rico’s [Rossy] spikes in his hand and he’s spray-painting them silver. He’s looking at Rico, and he said, ‘Rico, we’re going into the future.’ Guys had silver spikes Junior had spray-painted. Junior had a silver glove for the night. He had Nike make him special shoes for the game. Junior said, ‘We’re also going to play the game with our caps on backwards.’ There’s a fly ball hit into the left-center field gap, and there goes Junior. He makes the grab with his silver glove, his cap on backwards and his shirt just flying in the wind.” – Kevin Martinez
