24 Stories – The Swing

Ken Griffey Jr. owned one of the smoothest swings the game of baseball has ever witnessed. It was a swing that produced 2,781 hits, 630 home runs and 1,836 RBI over his 22-year career. In today’s edition of 24 Stories, former teammates and current stars share their admiration for Junior’s swing.

#5 – The Swing

“Everybody says I have an uppercut swing. I don’t have an uppercut swing. It’s just my follow-through is up…I was taught to keep the bat in the zone as long as I can. That’s what I try to do. The longer it’s in the zone, the better chance you have of making contact.” – Ken Griffey Jr.

“We knew he was going to be a star just by watching him come up, watching his swing – natural swing.” – Mike Jackson

“There’s no way that he has that much more pop than everybody else, but in all actuality, he did. Because his swing was just that sweet.” – Adam Jones

“He gets into the box, and he knows that pitcher doesn’t want to mess up. He gets that bat up and gets wiggling and getting that rhythm going, you’re just waiting for something great to happen.” – Andrew McCutchen

“He just went up there, and it was nice and easy, nice and smooth. The ball just exploded off his bat.” – Alex Gordon

“One of the smoothest swings ever.” – Robinson Canó

“Junior’s swing was very unique, very smooth. The bat through the zone was one of the best in game. A lot of players have to make adjustments [but] Junior was pretty consistent his whole career.” – Edgar Martinez
