Nelson Cruz is helping the Seattle Fire Department in their quest to win a $10,000 grant from the Medic One Foundation.

Nelson took some time before batting practice Friday to pose for photos with several members of the Seattle Fire Department, as well as Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins and an engine from Station 17. The photos will be used to promote SFD’s team in the Medic One Hotshot Crew Challenge.

Starting June 8, teams from 10 Puget Sound area fire departments will begin social media campaigns to encourage people to vote for their team. Each vote is a $10 donation to the Medic One Foundation. All the funds raised will be used to help train 23 paramedics in the latest life-saving skills, as well as purchase medical equipment for departments in rural communities.

Nelson adopted the fire department in his hometown of the Las Matas de Santa Cruz in the Dominican Republic. In 2012, while he was with the Texas Rangers, he bought the department a fire engine. He’s also helped them acquire a couple of ambulances.

Last fall, Nelson contacted Seattle Fire Chief Scoggins and asked if there was any surplus equipment that could be donated to the Las Matas de Santa Cruz department. Chief Scoggins collected a U-Haul sized container of boots, coats, hats and gloves that was shipped to the Dominican.

Now, Nelson is returning the favor by helping the Seattle Fire Department win the challenge and earn the $10,000 grant to purchase emergency medical equipment.

The Hotshot Crew Challenge starts on June 8 and ends on June 22. Starting June 8, log onto HotshotCrew.org to vote for Nelson and the Seattle Fire Department.
