Robinson Canó Named A.L. Player of the Week
Canó began the week by recording 3 hits Monday at Oakland, including his 450th career double. He became the 5th second baseman in Major League history with 2,000 hits, 450 doubles, 200 home runs and 1,000 RBI, joining Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio, Jeff Kent and Rogers Hornsby.
The following night in Oakland, Canó went 2-for-4 with 1 double and 1 home run, his 9th home run of the season.
Canó tallied 2 hits and 1 RBI as the Mariners completed the three-game sweep of Oakland on Wednesday.
As the road trip continued in Houston on Thursday, Canó continued his hot hitting. In the series opener against the Astros, Robinson went 3-for-5, with a double and 4 RBI, reaching 30 RBI for the season in just 28 games. His bases-clearing, 3-run double in the ninth inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame as the Mariners won, 6-3. It was his 4th multi-hit game of the week and his 5th in a row overall.
In the Mariners 3-2 win on Saturday, Canó belted 2 home runs while going 4-for-5. Canó homered in the 3rd to stake the Mariners to a 2-0 lead.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the 10th inning, Robbie connected again for a solo home run to give the Mariners the lead. It was Canó’s 2nd game-winning RBI of the week.
Canó capped the week with a home run in yesterday’s game, his 4th homer of the week and his American League-leading 12th of the season. On the week, Canó hit .516 (16×31) with 8 runs, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 9 RBI and a 1.516 OPS in 7 games.
