Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 42
Thursday, March 31, 2016 / 4 Days ’til Opening Day (April 4 at Texas Rangers)
Iwakuma and Vincent Pitch in Minor League Game
Thursday was a mostly quiet day in Mariners camp, as most of the team enjoyed the final off day of the 2016 Cactus League schedule and staff continued to pack up the Peoria Sports Complex in anticipation of Opening Day on Monday. But there was work to be done for a couple Mariners on the lower fields on the Padres side of the complex.
Hisashi Iwakuma and newly-acquired reliever Nick Vincent both appeared in the Mariners minor league game today against San Diego’s AAA affiliate. Iwakuma started and went 2.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits while striking out two and walking one. In his final tune-up before opening the regular season, Iwakuma threw 24 pitches (14 strikes).
The day after being acquired from the Padres, Vincent tossed 1.0 scoreless frame while not allowing a hit and striking out one. Vincent tossed 14 pitches in total (11 strikes), including a three-pitch strikeout of former teammate James Shields.
Meeting the Media
Following their appearances in today’s minor league game, Iwakuma and Vincent – as well as pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre – met with the beat reporters in camp covering the Mariners today.
Paciorek Gets Call to the National College Baseball Hall
Congratulations to former Mariners outfielder Tom Paciorek on being announced today as part of the 2016 National College Baseball Hall of Fame class. Paciorek became the first University of Houston player to earn first-team All America honors in 1967, leading the Cougars to an appearance in College World Series championship game while batting .435 with 10 home runs. From 1978 to 1981, Paciorek appeared in 403 games with the Mariners, batting .296 with 90 doubles, 39 home runs and 197 RBI. Perhaps the most memorable feat of Paciorek’s time with the Mariners took place when he hit walk off home runs to defeat the Yankees on back-to-back nights on May 8 and 9, 1981 at the Kingdome.
Happy Birthday, Dave!
Dave Wyman, former Seahawks linebacker and current host on 710 ESPN’s “Danny, Dave and Moore”, is celebrating his birthday today in Peoria. Happy birthday, Dave! (Don’t worry, Dave. We won’t tell anyone that it’s your 52nd birthday.)
