Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 19
Tuesday, March 8, 2016 / 27 Days ’til Opening Day (April 4 at Texas Rangers)
MARINERS AT INDIANS RECAP:
The Mariners rallied from two one-run deficits but it wasn’t enough in a 4-3 Cactus League loss to the Cleveland Indians in front of 3,893 fans at Goodyear Ballpark.
Seattle manufactured a run in the second inning to take a brief lead as Dae-Ho Lee drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a single to right field by Shawn O’Malley and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Mike Zunino.
After falling behind 2-1, Seattle manufactured another run as O’Malley reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and stole third base before scoring on a two-out single to first base by Daniel Robertson.
Trailing 3-2 in the 8th, Seattle tied things up with the help of the Cleveland defense. Efren Navarro reached on an error by the second baseman with one out, moved to second on a bunt single by Boog Powell, and moved to third as the third baseman threw the ball away trying to get Powell at first. Ed Lucas then followed with an RBI single to left field to tie it.
Seattle gave up the deciding run in the eighth inning and dropped to 3-4 during Cactus League play this spring.
Starter Nathan Karns worked out of some trouble with the help of his defense and finished with 3.0 innings pitched, allowing one run. Reliever Tony Zych followed with a perfect fourth inning while striking out two before Joe Wieland tossed 3.0 effective innings, allowing just one run on one hit and two walks. Lefty Vidal Nuño was tagged with the loss after giving up a single run in the eighth inning.

There are interesting aspects of each Cactus League stadium, and the surrounding area. Goodyear is a relatively new stadium (debuted in 2009) and is the spring home of Ohio’s two Major League teams (Cleveland Indians & Cincinnati Reds). As you drive to the ballpark you pass by Phoenix-Goodyear Airport, which is an old Naval Air Station, and is currently a graveyard and storage area for older commercial aircraft. It is a pretty cool visual to see over several big planes right in the middle of the desert. It seemed like there were more planes this year than in the past, and in talking with some locals, it turns out there are several planes that are currently active and used for training.
