Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 16

ANGELS VS. MARINERS RECAP:

The Mariners took an early lead but could not hold on in a 9-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels in Cactus League play in front of 8,425 fans at Peoria Stadium.

Seattle jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Ketel Marte doubled, Kyle Seager followed with an RBI single, and came around to score on a two-run home run to right field by Robinson Canó.

After the Angels rallied for two runs in the fourth inning, Franklin Gutierrez hit a solo home run to right-center field in the bottom half of the frame. Seattle added a run in the 5th inning as Seager singled in Daniel Robertston, who had doubled to lead off the inning, extending the lead to 5-2.

The Angels scored one run in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead before the Mariners rallied for two runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh. Seattle loaded the bases with no outs on back-to-back walks to Shawn O’Malley and Ed Lucas, a single by Chris Taylor, and scored on an RBI groundout by Tyler Smith and an RBI infield single by Luis Sardiñas.

The Angels scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to cap the scoring at 9-7.

Left-handed starter Wade Miley tossed 2.0 shutout frames before giving way to the bullpen. Right-hander Joel Peralta was the only reliever to record a scoreless appearance.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim v Seattle Mariners

The Mariners (2-2) return to Cactus League play tomorrow (Sunday, March 6) at 12:10 PT/1:10 MT at Surprise Stadium. The game will be broadcast in the Seattle are on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Right-handed pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Rangers right-hander Nick Tepesch.

Happy 31st Birthday to left-handed pitcher Brad Mills. March 5th is a popular birthday in the Mariners organization as former Mariners Erik Bedard, Ryan Franklin, Brian Lesher, Brian Hunter, Kevin Brown, Steve Oliveros and Steve Burke all are celebrating birthdays today.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was well represented at the ballpark today. President Jeff Idelson, Vice President Ken Meifert and a group of strong supporters came out to watch the Mariners workout and take in a ballgame. Both Robinson Canó and Nelson Cruz got a chance to catch up with Idelson while he was here.

CRUZER IN CAMP:

Julio Cruz arrived in Mariners camp today and will be with the club working with position players on base running for the next week. It is always good to have the Cruzer, and he won’t be the only former Mariners player that joins us this spring as Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner will all make appearances. Jamie Moyer wrapped up his week in Peoria today.

 

HULTZEN TOSSES LIVE BP:

LHP pitcher Danny Hultzen has had his fair share of injuries in his career, but showed up to spring ready for ready to pitch. After throwing a couple of bullpens earlier in camp, today he threw live BP. Look for Danny to get into a Spring Training game something in the next week.

The Mariners organization joins all of MLB in mourning the passing of New York Mets Sr. Director of PR Shannon Forde last night…Forde, who spent the past 20+ years in the Mets PR department, passed away after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
