Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 8
Friday, February 26, 2016 / 38 Days ‘til Opening Day (April 4 at Texas Rangers)
Another Beautiful Day
Live Pitching, Meet Live Hitting
Position player arrived yesterday, and today, guys stepped in to the batters box to face live pitching. Since it is just the second day of full-squad workouts, some hitters just stepped in to the box and tracked pitches against the live pitchers which included Wade Miley, Taijuan Walker and Steve Cishek. Above, you’ll see Kyle Seager tracking pitches against Cishek.
Before guys stepped in against live pitching, all the hitters in camp took their swings in the cages against pitching machines. One group featured Robinson Cano, Franklin Gutierrez, Kyle Seager and Nelson Cruz.
Robinson Cano, Franklin Gutierrez, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager make their way from the batting cages to the field during today’s workout. This quartet combined for 281 RBI in 528 games in 2015.
Two players that are complete opposites in the way they play their games are Korean first baseman Dae-Ho Lee and outfielder Boog Powell. Lee is a power-hitter while Powell is a slasher that focuses on getting on base. In the videos above, you’ll see Lee driving the ball, while Powell slashes. The slashing is a bit Ichiro-esque.
Former Mariners In Camp
Over six weeks during Spring Training, a “who’s who” of former Mariners will be in camp to work with the club. Make your plans to join us in Peoria. You just might get to meet current and former Mariners stars. Below is a list of former Mariners currently in camp:
- Hitting Coach Edgar Martinez
- Bullpen Coach Mike Hampton
- Special Assistant Coordinator Alvin Davis
- Defensive Coordinator Dan Wilson
The King and The Prince
After finishing his workout today, Felix Hernandez tossed BP to his son, Jeremy, on Field 1 this afternoon. Jeremy had much more success against his dad than the rest of the American League does.
Boog Explains Boog
Boog Powell was a popular request today. KCPQ 13, KING 5 and KOMO TV each gathered to chat with Powell and among the topics was his name. He explained that contrary to popular belief, he was not named after former Orioles slugger Boog Powell.
Special Visit From A Familiar Face
Taka Morimoto, who spent years as a Mariners athletic trainer, returned to camp to visit some old friends. Taka is currently with the PGA Tour and swung by Arizona before heading to Texas and Miami in the coming week.
Ask, And You Shall Receive
In previous years, newspaper, TV and radio reporters stuck to their craft. But with the new wave of social media emerging over the past few years, they’ve become multi-media reporters. Every reporter, including the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish and 710 ESPN Seattle’s Shannon Drayer (pictured), now spends part of their day taking photos and videos for their followers on social media. Everybody tries to get the best angle on a picture, and sometimes that requires crouching down and not always looking graceful. Be sure to follow their social media accounts (@RyanDivish & @ShannonDrayer) for the latest from Mariners camp.
Need A Bat?
MAX Bat company was in camp today. As I’m sure you’ve read, plenty of equipment companies come to camp to show off their products to players. We’ll continue having more swing by as Spring Training continues.
