Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 4
Monday, February 22, 2016 / 42 Days ‘til Opening Day (April 4 at Texas Rangers)
Bullpens, Bullpens and More Bullpens
Work in the bullpens continued today as the next group of pitchers took the mound and tossed their first official bullpens of the spring. Among them were left-handers James Paxton and Charlie Furbush. Today’s group included Felix Hernandez, but he’s not jumping on a mound until next week.
The King Presides
Even though Felix Hernandez didn’t take the mound, he was still in the area watching his teammates and chatting with GM Jerry Dipoto. Felix typically starts a few days later than everybody else so he’ll take the mound at some point this week.
The Return of Charlie
As you may know, left-hander Charlie Furbush missed most of the second-half of last season, but today he jumped on the mound.
After working out, Charlie met with the media and said he felt good. You can read more of his comments in Bob Dutton‘s post TNT.
If you’ve read the blog the last few days, you’ll notice that the catchers are working on framing pitches a little more this spring. Above is an up close look at how the catchers are framing some of the pitches. If you’d like to read more about the emphasis on framing, MLB.com’s Greg Johns has you covered: Framing Pitches Has Catchers Thinking Inside Box.
Cactus League Media Day
Major League Baseball held its fourth annual Cactus League Spring Training Media Day in Arizona today. The media availabilities were held at a Phoenix-area hotel.
Baseball operations officials and field managers of all 15 Arizona-based Clubs in Spring Training were invited to participate in two separate hour-long periods of media availability. Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. was also scheduled to be available. The sessions served as a preview of the 2016 season as Spring Training gets underway.
Rawlings In Camp
The Rawlings bat and glove company was in camp today to show their products to any interested players. As you see in the above pictures, there was a lot of product available and a lot options to choose from.
It Isn’t Always Easy
We try to bring you as much content as we can via twitter, blog, facebook and other social media outlets…but it isn’t always easy. As you’ll see in the example above, not everything goes according to plan when you’re trying to get an interesting video. Thanks, Vidal!
