Furbush Nominated for 2015 Roberto Clemente Award

Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of MLB, today announced that pitcher Charlie Furbush is the Seattle Mariners 2015 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

Wednesday, September 16, marks the 14th Annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

Furbush is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. The award pays tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others.

During his five years as a member of the Mariners, Furbush has supported charitable organizations and reached out to fans with a year-round commitment to making a difference in the community. In 2014 and 2015, he hosted the annual Mariners Care Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament, which raised over $410,000 for CF research during those two years. Charlie has also participated in the annual Mariners Caravan each January since 2013, delivering positive messages to kids in more than two dozen communities across the Pacific Northwest.

He is also an active supporter of the annual Toys for Kids program that provides holiday gifts for children in hospitals and homeless shelters each December. Furbush has made many visits to area hospitals including Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Kadlec Medical Center in the Tri-Cities and Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Beginning Wednesday, fans are encouraged to participate in the process of selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet by visiting ChevyBaseball.com to vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. Voting ends on Friday, October 9, and participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2015 World Series, where the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet will be announced.

MLB has been honoring players for community services since 1971. In 1973, the award was named after Roberto Clemente, the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Mariners players have received the Clemente Award three times: Harold Reynolds in 1991; Jamie Moyer in 2003; Edgar Martinez in 2004.
