Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 34
Wednesday, March 25, 2015 / 12 Days ‘til Opening Day (April 6 vs. LA Angels)
The Mariners held off a late Cubs rally in a 3-2 Cactus League win in front of 11,224 fans Wednesday night at Peoria Stadium. Mike Zunino hit his team-leading fourth Cactus League home run and Robinson Canó went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. The big story was the dominating performance by starter Taijuan Walker, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts. Here is the official box score from MLB.com.
Sterling Effort by Walker:
Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker turned in another solid start, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and recording 6 strikeouts. In 5 Cactus League starts, Walker has not allowed a run in 18.0 innings while recording 19 strikeouts.
The first pitch temperature at Peoria Stadium under the lights was 83° with a slight breeze blowing out to center field.
Left-handed pitcher Edgar Olmos received his championship ring from the Arizona Fall League today. Olmos pitched in 9 games for the AFL champion Salt River Rafters.

Reliever Danny Farquhar made an appearance in a minor league game this afternoon…he faced three batters, struck out the first two and then got a grounder to finish off his outing…he recorded 13 pitches, 11 of them for strikes.

Shortstop Brad Miller made a nice scoop and throw on a tricky hop on a ball hit at him to end the top of the 5th inning. Check out the play in the video clip below:
Mariners catcher Mike Zunino and roving catching coordinator (and Mariners Hall of Famer) Dan Wilson both celebrated birthday’s today. Zunino of course celebrated by hitting his team-leading 4th home run of the spring. Tomorrow is the big day for assistant athletic trainer Rob Nodine.
Our good friends at Cookin’ On Wood fired up their grill today and will be providing the post-game spread for the players. The short ribs, lamb, chicken and tri-tip were all raved about by players and staff.
Opening Day First Pitch – Joey Cora:
Joey Cora, the scrappy second baseman who was a fan favorite during his years with the Mariners, has been tabbed to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day April 6.
Meet Your Idol:
We wrote in yesterday’s blog that utility player Shawn O’Malley got a chance to meet one of his childhood idols, Ken Griffey Jr.. Well today he got his picture taken with Junior.
The famous Budweiser Clydesdales were in Peoria today and drew quiet a crowd prior to the game tonight vs. the Cubs.
