Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 26
Tuesday, March 17, 2015 / 20 Days ‘til Opening Day (April 6 vs. LA Angels)
The Mariners allowed 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and ended the game in a 5-5 tie with the White Sox. First baseman Logan Morrison went 2-for-3 with a triple and home run and starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma threw 4.0 scoreless innings to lead the Mariner, who are now 6-7-1 in spring training play. Wear your Green:
The Mariners celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with the annual tradition of wearing green hats. Here is a picture of the hat pictured next to the jersey of today’s starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma.
On the Back Fields:
James Paxton, Tom Wilhelmsen and Fernando Rodney all threw in a minor league Intrasquad game today in Peoria. For Paxton, it was his second time facing live hitters this spring and the first time in a true game environment. Paxton threw 3.0 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits. Wilhelmsen threw a scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts and Rodney allowed one run in 2.0 innings. Danny Hultzen also pitched in the game striking out 3 in 2.0 innings.
Felix & Divish:
Seattle Times beat reporter Ryan Divish interviewed Felix Hernandez last week when Fox Sports was in camp to preview the Mariners. The 10-minute interview is scheduled to run on Fox Sports Live tonight.
The first pitch temperature at Camelback Ranch was 86°, with the temperature rising to nearly 90° by mid-day. The concourse at Camelback Ranch was packed with fans seeking shade from the heat.
Meanwhile, on the Minor League Side:
While the Big League camp was quiet yesterday for the off day, minor league camp had its first full workout yesterday with 158 players taking the field. Today was a full day for the minor league side: pre-workout today included blood work and photo day, then the workout, and post-workout will include two sessions (English and Spanish) of media training. Lots of TV Coming Up:
After today, 10 of the Mariners remaining 18 Cactus League games will be televised by ROOT SPORTS…two additional games, March 23 at LA Angels and March 27 at Kansas City, are scheduled to air on the MLB Network (check listings).
The Cubs announced their starting pitcher for Saturday’s 1:05 pm game in Mesa…and it will be a pretty good match-up with a pair of aces taking the mound. The Mariners will start RHP Felix Hernandez while the Cubs will counter with LHP Jon Lester. Here is a look at the upcoming probable pitchers:
The Mariners made one roster move today, optioning RHP Mayckol Guaipe to AAA Tacoma. The spring roster is currently at 50 players (36 roster, 14 non-roster).
