Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 12
Tuesday, March 3, 2015 / 34 Days ‘til Opening Day (April 6 vs. Los Angeles Angels)
Before We Get Started:
Don’t forget that the Cactus League schedule begins tomorrow and the Mariners game against the Padres will be televised on ROOT SPORTS starting at 12:00 pm Seattle time. It will be replayed at 3:30 pm and 9:00 pm. In all, 16 Mariners games will be televised this spring.
When wandering the halls of the Mariners Spring Training Complex, you never know when two old friends are going to spend some time catching up. Mr. Mariner Alvin Davis walked in to the PR offices and bumped in to play-by-play man extraordinaire Rick Rizzs. The two caught up for a bit before they each got back to work.
Nothing To See Here, Folks:
When you come down to Arizona, you see some things that you wouldn’t normally see when you’re in the lobby. Sometimes, Felix Hernandez might be walking through, you might bump in to a media member, and sometimes you’ll see Mariners prospects just hanging out. This morning, pitchers Richard Vargas and Eddie Campbell were just hanging out in the lobby, catching up on their reading before having a meeting with Farm Director Chris Gwynn.
He Made It! Aaron Goldsmith Has Arrived:
Mariners play-by-play man Aaron Goldsmith arrived in Mariners camp this morning and got situated after flying in last night. If you read the blog yesterday, you saw a picture of Rick Rizzs, Mike Blowers and Dave Sims sitting on the couch…today, it’s pretty lonely on said couch…
If you’ve been down here, you know there’s a pretty good chance you’ll get to interact with some Mariners. Tom Wilhelmsen and Charlie Furbush made friends with a child climbing the fence, while Alvin Davis also brought a smile to a little ones face.
Danny Hultzen In Action:
Left-hander Danny Hultzen threw to live hitters this morning, facing prospects Austin Cousino, Ian Miller and Tyler Smith. Hultzen told the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish that “It felt good to get back out there again and get those juices going. I hadn’t had that in a while. I hadn’t been out there since last September. It’s just another step going forward.”
Brief Call-Ups for Prospects:
As you saw from the video above, sometimes minor league players are brought up to work on some things with the Major Leaguers. Cousino, Miller and Smith got to face Hultzen, while another group of players got to help the team work on defensive drills. They may be only running the bases and stepping up to the plate for BP, but it’s still fun to see the young guys get on the same field as the Major Leaguers.
NBC Sports’ Joe Posnanski arrived in camp today and chatted with The News Tribune’s Bob Dutton and Mariners pitching coach Rick Waits. He seemed focused on asking questions about Felix Hernandez so be on the lookout for his work in the next few days.
