Mariners Mondays – A Royal Road Sweep
This week on Mariners Mondays on ROOT SPORTS – A Royal sweep.
Mariners offense and a solid performance from the bullpen handed the Kansas City Royals a 7-5 loss on June 20, the first of what would be three consecutive Mariners wins at Kaufman Stadium.
Charlie Furbush inherited a bases loaded, one-out jam in the 8th inning, but handled Mike Moustakas with a pop-up to right and struck out Alcides Escobar to preserve the tie.
Brad Miller’s 9th inning hit off Greg Holland, one of the best closers in the game, snapped the 5-5 tie. Logan Morrison followed with another run. Fernando Rodney struck out Alex Gordon on three pitches to end the game and earn his 19th save.
The next day, more 9th inning heroics delivered a 2-1 win. Starter Chris Young baffled Royals hitters with his 85-mile-an-hour fastball, and Dustin Ackley drove in the winning run with two outs in the 9th. Rodney got the save with a game-ending double play from Eric Hosmer.
The final game of the three-game series was also decided by one run. Rookie starter Roenis Elias pitched into the 7th inning, scattering five singles and struck out five while giving up just one run. Catcher Mike Zunino broke a 1-all tie in the top of the 9th with his 9th home run of the season. Fernando Rodney, pitching for a 4th straight day, earned his 21st save and the sweep of the A.L. Central-leading Royals.
