Mariners Mondays – Bullpen Brilliance
Tonight on Mariners Mondays on ROOT SPORTS – the Mariners bullpen shows why it was among the best in baseball, and the bats breakout in a big way.
Felix Hernandez was on the mound on July 5, as the Mariners met the White Sox in Chicago for the second of a three-game weekend series. Felix had given up just three hits when the White Sox scored two runs in the 8th. The Mariners came back to tie it up in the top of the 9th, and the Mariners bullpen took over. Four pitchers held the White Sox scoreless with one-hit baseball over the next five innings until the 2-2 tie was broken up in the 14th when Brad Miller hit an RBI double. Fernando Rodney then earned his League-best 25th save with a spotless bottom of the 14th.
The Mariners bullpen was sterling in the September 16 game at Angles Stadium on September 16.
Starter Roenis Elias surrendered two runs in the first inning and left the game with elbow stiffness after facing just one batter in the 4th. Five relievers held the Angels to just one hit over the next five and two-thirds innings, with young Carson Smith notching hisfirst Major League win.
The Mariners offense also helped out with an offensive outburst of 10 runs in the 5th and 6th innings.
The 13-2 win over the Angels put the Mariners within one game of the second Wild Card.
Mariners Mondays episodes air at 7pm on ROOT SPORTS January through March leading up to the April 6th Opening Day game against the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field.
