Mariners Add Three to 40-Man Roster

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced tonight the following roster moves:

Added to 40-Man Roster:

  • RHP Mayckol Guaipe selected to Major League roster (Michael gwhy-pay)
  • C John Hicks selected to Major League roster
  • INF Ketel Marte selected to Major League roster (kuh-TELL MAR-tay)

With these transactions, the Mariners 40-man roster is at 39 players.

Guaipe, 24, spent the 2014 season with AA Jackson making 40 relief appearances for the Generals. The right-hander posted a 1-3 record with 12 saves and a 2.89 ERA (18 ER, 56.0 IP). He averaged 9.00 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (56 strikeouts) and posted the lowest WHIP (0.964) amongst Mariners full-season minor leaguers. The native of Barcelona, Venezuela was originally signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted international free agent on Oct. 11, 2006.

Hicks, 25, split the season between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma batting .290 (84×290) with 12 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs and 47 RBI in 81 games. The catcher has thrown out nearly 50% of attempted base-stealers during his four minor league seasons (137 CS, 151 SB), including 38.2% (26 CCS, 42 SB) in 2014. Following the regular season Hicks appeared in 13 games with the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League and hit .304 (14×46) with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 11 RBI. The native of Richmond, Va., was originally selected by the Mariners in the 4th round of the 2011 MLB June Draft out of the University of Virginia.

Marte, 21, hit .304 (159×523) with 79 runs scored, 32 doubles, 6 triples, 4 home runs and 55 RBI in 128 games with AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma. Amongst Mariners minor leaguers, the switch hitter ranked 3rd in batting average and hits, and 4th in stolen bases (29). He was named a Southern League All-Star batting .302 (134×443) in 109 games with Jackson before being promoted to Tacoma on Aug. 10. In 19 games as one of the youngest players in the Pacific Coast League, he batted .313 (25×80) with 5 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI. The native of Nizao, Dominican Republic was originally signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted international free agent on Aug. 13, 2010.
