African American Heritage Day

The Mariners will celebrate African American Heritage Day at Safeco Field today with a pregame ceremony to honor contributions of noted African Americans to the Northwest community. Among the honorees will be Herb Simpson, the last known surviving member of the old Negro Leagues Seattle Steelheads.

Here is a great story on Herb by Seattle Times columnist Jerry Brewer from last year.

Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Russell will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Here is a pretty amazing photo of Herb taken by Seattle photographer Rick Takagi.
