Mariners LHP James Paxton had a strong season debut last night, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 9 batters in 7.0 shutout innings vs. the Angels. If you combine his starts from the end of the 2013 season, James is now 4-0 with a 1.16 ERA (4 ER, 31.0 IP) with 30 strikeouts in his first 5 career starts. The Elias Sports Bureau notes that this is a pretty notable start to a career:

This guys was outright NASTY last night. Hitting 98 mph on his FB, which is the fastest LHP FB in MLB over even Price/Kershaw/Lester. His changeup and slider are also deadly arsenals “if” he continues to locate them properly.

He does that and he could end up with AL ROY and Cy Young awards. Long season, but it’s gonna be interesting to see if he can pull a 1st half Pineda. I think it’s possible!
