Safeco Field approaching “Zero Waste” goal

Over 90% of all waste generated at Safeco Field in 2013 was recycled.

The Mariners fiscal year goes from October to October, so we’re finishing up closing the books on 2013. Among the updates is a milestone in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Over 90% of all waste generated at Safeco Field during the last 12 months was recycled – 90.94% to be exact. Back in 2005, before we began our sustainability efforts in earnest, the recycling rate was only 12%.

The biggest category is compostables (food waste and yard waste). That accounts for 46% of the total, or 782 tons. This year, we also recycled 297 tons of concrete and steel from the outfield wall relocation and Edgar’s Cantina construction projects.

Last year, Major League Baseball named the Mariners the top recycling club in the American League, and we were just edged out of the “Green Glove” Award for environmental stewardship by the San Francisco Giants.
