The Lou Piniella Reports
Yesterday a FoxSports.com article stated that the Mariners recently contacted Lou Piniella about returning to manage the team and described the Mariners pursuit of Piniella as “a full court press.”
Here is what actually happened.
A few days after the final game of the season, Mariners President Chuck Armstrong called Lou to advise him that he has been selected to be the newest member of the Mariners Hall of Fame, for induction during the 2014 season. In the course of the conversation, the subject of the vacant manager’s job came up, and thinking out loud, Lou said he might be interested in it. Lou and Chuck both said they would think more about it. A day or two later Lou said he was happy with what he is doing and wasn’t interested in managing a Major League team again.
The characterization of a “full court press” is not accurate. Meanwhile, Mariners Executive Vice President/General Manager Jack Zduriencik is leading the search process and continues to develop a list of possible candidates.
Jack has said that he would expect more news on the manager sometime after the conclusion of the World Series.
