Mariners Corporate Counsel Named Best by PSBJ
Congratulations are in order for a man Mariners President Chuck Armstrong calls the team’s unsung hero – Bart Waldman, Mariners Executive Vice President, Legal and Governmental Affairs.
He was named Outstanding Corporate Counsel for a small company by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
Bart is the guy who helps negotiate all the Mariners player contracts, among other things.
Among his proudest achievements in 21 years as a sports lawyer, “we just finished our 11th straight year avoiding salary arbitration with our arbitration-eligible players” (those with three to six years of Major League experience). Waldman attributes that to “a lot of hard work and dedication, both by us and the player agents, to studying a ton of statistics and negotiating early in the process.”
As good as he is in the boardroom, he’s equally skilled on the ball field. Waldman plays in the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League, and his teams have won six straight championships. He’s also on a senior All-Star team that has won championships five of the last six years.
