Opening Night and Supreme Court Hightlight Mariners Opening Homestand
Monday is Opening Night at Safeco Field, a night of pomp and ceremony, a little fireworks, and Mariners fans’ first up-close look at the team. It’s always a great day, and in fact, we here at the Corner of Edgar & Dave wonder why it’s not a national holiday. But we digress.
If you have not already made plans to be at Safeco Field on Monday, there’s still time to get tickets. And what a night it will be.
Jamie Moyer, the winningest pitcher in Mariners history, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, which will be caught by his former battery mate, Mariners Hall of Famer Dan Wilson.
Fresh off the stages of South By Southwest, Seattle band Pickwick will perform a set of three songs including a cover of Elvis Costello’s Pump It Up, John Fogerty’s baseball classic Centerfield, and an original composition called Window Sill. You fans of KEXP know Pickwick well. For those who are new to the group, their sound is a fusion of blues, soul and R&B, with tight instrumental grooves and the powerful, soulful voice of singer Galen Disston.
One of the highlights of the pregame ceremony is the always-emotional first run around the bases by a Make-A-Wish® child. This year, it’s 11-year old Marlee Burkett of Sammamish. She did a few practice laps at Safeco Field on Friday, and she looks to be in mid-season form.
We’ll also hear the dulcet tones of our beloved Dave Niehaus as he reads a classic poem about the magic of opening day and baseball.
Opening Night is only the first of a 10-game homestand. Other highlights include a convening of the Supreme Court on Thursday, April 11, for Felix’s first Safeco Field start of the year. The first 25,000 fans will get a King Felix Supreme Court t-shirt and commemorative K card, courtesy of ROOT SPORTS®. Special ticket prices for the game are $10 for all View Level seats and $25 for select Main Level, Terrace Club and Outfield Reserved seats.
Saturday, April 13, is the annual Salute to Armed Forces Night, presented by The Boeing Company, where we pay tribute to the men and women serving our nation in the military. The evening will feature a special pre-game ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m. Current and former members of the U.S. military receive special discounts. Following the game, 15,000 fans will take home a commemorative Mariners military coin, courtesy of Boeing.
There are also two Safeco Insurance Grand Slam Family Pack Nights and a BECU Family Night during the opening homestand. Come on out to the ballpark and help usher in another season of Mariners Baseball.
