Endy Chavez Signs With Mariners
The Mariners added a familiar face to their spring training roster today, signing outfielder Endy Chavez to a minor league contract this morning. Endy will participate in Major League Spring Training over the next couple of days and will wear #9. He is on today’s lineup card and could see action against the Diamondbacks.
Mariners fans will or course remember Endy the Mariners Opening Day left fielder in 2009, but had his season cut short after suffering an ACL tear in his right knee in a collision with Yuniesky Betancourt. Chavez batted .273 (44×161) in 54 games with the Mariners before his season-ending knee injury.
And baseball fans will surely remember this catch by Endy in the 2006 NLCS vs. the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the best in playoff history. Kind of a fun moment in the clubhouse this morning, Oliver Perez gave Endy (his former teammate) a big hug when he arrived in the clubhouse. Perez was the pitcher on the mound when Chavez leaped high above the left field fence to rob Scott Rolen of a home run.
